Will Ellerton

Will Ellerton is a jazz pianist and composer from Brisbane, whose work is grounded in jazz performance while seeking to expand its expressive and harmonic possibilities. He holds a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours from the Queensland Conservatorium, receiving the Griffith Award for Academic Excellence. His Honours explored new harmonic possibilities in jazz through microtonal tuning systems, extending the tonal palette available to improvisers. Developed in response to performance questions rather than purely theoretical inquiry, this work reflects his broader artistic interest in cultivating subtle gradations of colour that enhance expressive nuance in live music-making. With his Ramsay Postgraduate Scholarship, he will study a Master of Arts (Performance) in Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music, London, where he will refine his artistic voice through collaboration with leading performers and composers. Will’s long-term goal is to sustain an international performing career while contributing to the development of future musicians through mentorship in a conservatorium context, ensuring jazz remains both artistically rigorous and widely accessible.
