Elena Winstanley is an archaeology scholar from Sydney. She holds a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Otago, New Zealand. Her Law Honours dissertation analysed a recent human rights law decision from a constitutional perspective and was submitted by her university for a national writing award. Her academic interests focus on archaeology, cultural heritage protection, and museum ethics, with particular attention to the ethical stewardship of artefacts and the frameworks governing their ownership, interpretation and display. Elena has volunteered on an archaeological excavation in New Zealand and is currently working on the Athenian Agora excavation run by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. This is a highly competitive opportunity, with only 15-25 people selected globally each field season. With her Ramsay Postgraduate Scholarship, Elena will study the MA in Archaeology of the Mediterranean, Egypt and Middle East at UCL. In the future, Elena aspires to a career working in museums and heritage policy.
