Daniel Arnold is an early-career molecular virologist and biophysical chemist from Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathology) from Charles Sturt University, graduating with First Class Honours and six Executive Dean’s Awards. He has conducted virological research at world-leading institutions including Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore, and the University of Tokyo, Japan. With the support of his Ramsay Postgraduate Scholarship, Daniel will pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Biochemistry at Oxford. His doctoral research will utilise techniques from physics and chemistry to elucidate influenza virus–host interactions at the atomic level, advancing the development of novel antiviral drugs and next-generation vaccines to combat emerging pandemic influenza strains, including avian influenza H5N1. Post-study, Daniel aims to return to Australia and lead a research group focused on viruses with pandemic potential. Outside the lab, Daniel is an Australian champion ballroom dancer with more than 15 years of experience.
